Smiling resident enjoying lunch with others in the dining room

Freshly cooked food in your care home. With a kitchen that supports your team.

Do you prepare meals for your residents on site? Then you know the challenge: serving favourite dishes, suitable textures and individual portions reliably across every unit, while allowing for personal needs. MKN cooking technology helps your kitchen team deliver fresh, dependable results every day.

Let's discuss your kitchen

Food in a care home. More than just a meal.

In residential and nursing care, mealtimes give structure to the day. For residents, familiar flavours, a well-laid table and eating together all matter.

Behind every meal is a skilled kitchen team. They know the residents' favourite dishes, follow the requirements set by care and therapy professionals, and keep meal service running reliably across every unit, with flexibility for individual mealtimes, often with limited staff and tight budgets.

What a care-home kitchen manages every day
Multiple meals every day
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, with little time between each service.
Familiar favourites and variety
Regional favourites matter just as much as a varied menu.
Different dietary requirements
Regular meals, texture-modified options and individual adaptations, prepared in parallel and allocated reliably.
Reliable meal service
Multiple units need to be served reliably, with flexibility for individual mealtimes and small additional options.
Limited staffing
Especially at weekends and during holiday periods, operations still need to run smoothly with fewer staff.
Hygiene and cleaning
Cleaning starts after every meal, often alongside physically demanding tasks.

Different needs. Meals made to match.

Appetite, portion size and nutritional requirements vary from person to person. For the kitchen, that means delivering the same quality in different forms, attractively presented and correctly allocated.

Regular menus

Familiar dishes and seasonal variety, with clearly recognisable components on the plate.

Texture-modified meals

Chewing difficulties and swallowing disorders present different requirements. The kitchen prepares each meal to the specified texture and presents it attractively.

Individual portions

When someone eats only small amounts, appropriate nutritional composition and suitable supplementary options matter just as much as portion size. For the kitchen, these are additional tasks alongside the regular menu.

Supplementary options

Snacks, finger food, for example for residents with dementia, and fortified meals as part of an individually tailored nutrition plan.

The kitchen delivers meals in line with each resident's individual nutritional requirements. For swallowing disorders, the appropriate texture is specified by the responsible medical or dysphagia specialist. Cooking technology supports preparation, but does not replace a coordinated nutrition plan.

From your kitchen workflow to a complete MKN solution.

The right technology depends on your menu, dietary requirements, quantities and service times. MKN offers two types of equipment for the job, developed and manufactured in Wolfenbüttel:

All-rounders are versatile appliances that handle different tasks throughout the day, from vegetables and braised dishes to sauces. Specialists provide dedicated capacity for tasks that arise regularly or at the same time, such as larger batches of soup in the boiling pan or individual dishes on the induction unit.

Process first. Technology second.

Six kitchen tasks. And how technology can help.

Start with the task, then choose the technology. These examples show the roles different appliances can play. The right combination for your kitchen depends on your workflow.

How technology can help

Soups and stews

Needed every day, often in larger quantities, and used as the basis for texture-modified meals.
FlexiChef®, FlexiMix® or OPTIMA® boiling pans, depending on the dish, production volume and workflow.

Sauces and dishes that require constant stirring

Constant stirring demands attention and is physically strenuous.
The FlexiMix® agitator takes care of strenuous stirring, while the low pouring height makes emptying easier. This reduces strain on backs and arms, leaving your team free to focus on other tasks.

Braised dishes

Familiar dishes such as roulades or goulash need time and even heat.
Use the FlexiChef® to sear and braise in one pan, or the FlexiCombi® for gentle cooking.

Vegetables and side dishes

Colour, flavour and the right individual texture need to be preserved, even in larger quantities.
Use the FlexiCombi® to steam with saved programmes for consistent results.

Preparing menu components in parallel

The main component, side dishes and sauce all need to be ready at the same time for service.
All-rounders share the main workload. If an OPTIMA® boiling pan handles the daily soup, the FlexiChef® and FlexiCombi® remain available for other components.

Individual dishes

A personal request, a special portion, or a fortified or modified option, prepared alongside ongoing production.
The OPTIMA® induction unit is ready for the job without tying up the all-rounders.

Making everyday work easier for kitchen teams. More time for what matters.

Technology does not replace professional expertise. But it can make repetitive, physically demanding tasks easier and keep operations stable even when staffing changes.

Repetitive tasks

Saved cooking programmes support consistent results, even when team members change.

Reducing physical strain

Automatic stirring and a low pouring height on the FlexiMix® make demanding, time-consuming tasks easier.

Cleaning

SpaceClean® automatically cleans the FlexiChef® pan, while WaveClean® provides cleaning programmes for the combi steamer.

Organising the workload

Well-planned advance production can smooth out workload peaks, for example at weekends, supported by suitable refrigeration and coordinated hygiene processes.

Quality all the way to the resident. From kitchen to table.

The quality that reaches the plate is not determined by cooking alone. Long holding times can affect flavour, appearance and texture. That is why production and service need to work together.

1
Production
The right cooking method and time for each component, coordinated with service.
2
Portioning
The right portion size, diet and texture, correctly allocated to each resident.
3
Distribution
The route to each unit, kept as short as possible and supported by suitable distribution equipment.
4
Service
Attractively presented and served at the right temperature, at the usual time or individually when the day's routine calls for it.
How MKN contributes
Our cooking technology supports step 1 by helping teams prepare food consistently. Production planning aligned with service can reduce unnecessarily long holding times, with the right technology and coordinated processes.
Working together
Steps 2 to 4 require clear communication between the kitchen, housekeeping and care teams: preferences, diets, quantities and allocation. Information also needs to flow back the other way. What do residents enjoy? What is left on the plate? Which preferences have changed? Feedback from the units helps the kitchen team adjust dishes and quantities. Distribution equipment and service are part of your overall concept.

Planning a new kitchen or modernising an existing one?

Two facilities with the same number of residents can need completely different kitchens. What matters is how the day unfolds in your kitchen. That is why it pays to look at the entire process before discussing appliances.

Your specialist kitchen planner is responsible for the kitchen design. MKN contributes expertise in cooking processes and appliances, and provides the technical data.

For a sound economic assessment, the entire operation matters: staff time, ingredients, energy, water, cleaning, investment, maintenance and spatial requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What cooking technology is right for a care-home kitchen?+
It depends on your menu, dietary requirements, quantities and meal-service workflow. Versatile appliances such as a combi steamer and a FlexiChef® often form the foundation, while specialists such as a boiling pan or induction hob handle tasks that arise regularly or at the same time. There is no one-size-fits-all equipment package.
How can different menu components be prepared in parallel?+
By allocating tasks efficiently across the appliances: vegetables and the main component cook in the combi steamer, the sauce is prepared in the FlexiChef®, the soup in the boiling pan and an individual dish on the induction hob. The right allocation depends on the dishes and quantities involved.
How can technology help when staffing is limited?+
Saved cooking programmes, automatic stirring and assisted cleaning can make repetitive tasks easier. Coordinated advance production helps smooth out workload peaks, for example at weekends. Technology does not replace staff, but it can ease the pressure on the team you have.
What is essential when preparing different diets?+
Above all, clear coordination between the kitchen, care and therapy teams: who needs which diet or texture? For swallowing disorders, the responsible specialists specify the texture. Preparation requires suitable cooking technology as well as additional preparation equipment, for example for puréeing. Capacity for small special batches alongside main production is also helpful.
What should be considered when modernising an existing kitchen?+
Existing utilities, ventilation and movement routes should be assessed early, along with how meal provision will continue during the refurbishment. Modernisation can often be completed in stages. Where space is limited, the SpaceCombi® can be an option as a fully featured combi steamer just 55 cm wide.
